He grinned, waving his weapon as he spoke, “Let me tell you a story about your old man… "   Reviews For Samantha Barclay, counselor at Milton High School in the little town of Paxton, West Virginia, life is never serene.  Just when her relationship with Deputy Al Michaels has reached an exciting new stage and her father is on the verge of marrying his newfound love, change enters in the form of an old FBI friend. Ryan Leam’s son, Jason, a popular student at Sacred Heart Academy, has been kidnapped.  None of his friends are willing to talk about the boy.  Ryan asks Samantha to accept an undercover assignment as a temporary counselor in the school so that she can   investigate the case. At the same time, Mariah Blue, a cigar smoking, Scotch drinking, pistol packing  New York reporter packs her lucky shoes, a pair of red velvet stilettos, and sets out on an assignment of her own.  We don’t know the nature of this assignment, but it concerns Sam and appears to bode ill for the busy counselor. So begins the dual mystery in CHANCES, Suzanne Hurley’s new addition to her Samantha Barclay series. Once settled in Virginia with her Irish setter, Maxine, Sam discovers that things aren’t what they appear.  Was Jason kidnapped, or could he have arranged his own disappearance to escape from an unhappy home life?  Are his parents or his girlfriend hiding a secret?  And could the jovial neighborhood priest possibly be one of the villains? Most important of all, where is Jason now and who is the man who means to harm him? When we think we know the answers, Ms. Hurley cleverly twists the plot in a different direction.  Soon Sam finds herself once again in grave danger, risking not only her relationship with Al but also her life.  In the meantime, after a series of frustrations and dead ends, Mariah Blue finds Sam, and we still don’t know her agenda.  This is a book that will keep you guessing right up to the last chapter.  Ms. Hurley is a talented writer who is willing to experiment with previous success.  She uses the first point of view for Samantha, as in previous books; for Mariah she switches to third person, a technique that keeps the suspense at a fever pitch.  And this is a true page-turner.  It kept me coming back to read “just one more chapter” while my other chores went undone. I was happy to be back in Samantha’s world with her friends, enjoying her sense of humor, marveling at how she managed to extricate herself from the direst predicaments and deal realistically with a major, unanticipated crisis in her own life. A student has disappeared. Some say he has run away, while others insist he has been kidnapped. Sam puts her own life on the line to find him and keep him safe. Little does she know that even as she and her dog, Maxine, brave dangers to locate the missing teenager, she herself is being stalked by an aggressive New York reporter, Mariah Blue. Even as she works to win trust from others, she herself struggles with the same problem. Her boyfriend, Deputy Al Michaels, can only shake his head in wonder as Sam tries to tackle the whole situation... alone. I loved this suspense novel so much I read it twice, back-to-back. Yes, it’s that good! I’ve read Ms Suzanne M. Hurley before, but this is by far the best book she has master-minded. The ending will keep you gasping with surprises. She is welcomed by the faculty at her new school assignment, but students are wary of her attempts to garner information about Jason Leam. Meanwhile, New York Times reporter Mariah Blue takes a surprising ‘vacation’ and heads to West Virginia on a quest to locate Samantha.         Ms. Hurley artfully weaves together these two story lines to keep the reader guessing.
